The next week was…awkward, to put it mildly. Alex did everything in his power to avoid being in the same room as me, and I appreciated his attempts to give me space. But this couldn’t continue. We had to find a balance where I could do my job and he could spend as much time as possible with his kids.

Most days, he had meetings and appearances, which he clearly detested. I wondered how he’d gotten through his days as a star quarterback if he disliked the limelight so much. I asked Gary about it one day as he waited for Alex in the giant entryway of the house. He just laughed and told me that lots of players feel that way and that Alex wasn’t alone in just wanting to put his head down and do his job. He explained that being an owner would involve fewer spotlights in the long run, but it was still early days.

When I saw Alex with the boys, it was increasingly easy for me to forget that he was so damn famous. Watching him show Miller the correct grip on his small football was ridiculously charming, and seeing him connect in conversation with Aiden while tossing the ball back and forth in the huge backyard made my belly do flips.

I was getting attached, and I could feel it. That was way too dangerous for my heart. Every time I caught myself smiling dreamily, I forced my thoughts to Keller and got back to work.

Despite the temptation of Alex and the awkwardness of our interactions, I loved my job and was completely under the spell of all three of the young Jamesons. Aiden, despite his attempts at flippancy, had a core made completely of marshmallow. He watched out for both of his brothers without being obvious about it.

Everett was on a constant hunt for approval and reassurance, his insecurity sometimes painfully obvious. His soul was a sensitive one, and I was guessing his uncertain state was inextricably linked to the disappearance of his mother.

Miller, on the other hand, was a funny, carefree, gregarious kid, easily distracted and always quick with a joke or a hug. All three boys were wonders and I looked forward to seeing what each new day would bring with my little charges.

About a week and a half after my “encounter” with Alex, as I’d been calling it, I was rallying the troops for a planned trip to the Children’s Creativity Museum when there was a knock at the front door. Since I was the closest one to it, and the kids seemed to be ignoring my orders to get their booties in gear, I went to answer it. A peek through the ornate glass showed the form of a tall, thin, blond woman elegantly dressed in designer-wear and sky-high heels. Figuring I could take her if she turned out to be some crazy stalker, I opened the door. Miller chose that moment to duck under my arm and I tried to hold him back.
